Leveraging Landfolio to manage the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and associated obligations
Landfolio is increasingly being used by governments of participating nations to effectively implement the provisions of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). These countries have developed tracking solutions for monitoring the export and import of rough diamonds.
Challenge
The Kimberley Process (KP), established in 2003 by a United Nations resolution, provides effective and pragmatic measures to address the risks that the trade in rough diamonds carries through fuelling and financing armed conflict and other illicit activities. The problem arises particularly in regions where artisanal and alluvial diamond mining activities predominate.
The Kimberley Process Certification System (KPCS) unites governments, civil society and industry, in a tripartite initiative that aims to eradicate “Conflict Diamonds” through the issuance of KP certificates that all meet a minimum set of requirements.
Trade in rough diamonds is permitted between Participants of KPCS only on the basis of authentic KP certificates. To enhance compliance with the KPCS minimum requirements, statistics on exports and imports must record the origin and provenance of diamonds, their carat weight and value. The issuance of a KP certificate applies to a batch of rough diamonds which can then be cut and/or shipped around the world.
Solution
Landfolio can be configured to manage the entire Kimberley Process certification workflow starting with the receipt of the necessary application documentation and fees.
The application can then be reviewed and verified online by the relevant authority. Once the application is approved, the official Certificate can be generated.
Upon issuing of the KP Certificate, the system can send notifications to both the KPC Authority and the applicant who then collects the original certificate.
The application details, the origin and provenance of diamonds, their carat weight and value are recorded in the system and can be fully reported on.
